The Terrific Trekkers

Among the many features of the Crompton Park League were the outstanding out-of-towners who made the trek to Worcester to compete. UCONN Stars Toby Kimball, Wes Bialosuknia and Bob Staak traveled from Storrs. Greater Hartford sent many fine players to Crompton Park, including Owen Mahorn and Howie Greenblatt. Among those representing the Boston area were Steve Adelman, King Gaskins and Roscoe Baker.

Yet another Greater Bostonian and teammate of Adelman’s at Boston College, then coached by Bob Cousy, also starred in the Crompton Park League.

Jim Nelson had an exceptional career as a high school, prep school, college and professional player in Athens, Greece.

Note: In the 1961 New England Prep School Championship Class A Game, Jim scored 30 points in leading his Huntington Prep Quintet squad over the Dee Rowe coached Worcester Academy.

Of his Crompton Park experience, Jim states:

“Playing in the Crompton Park League provided to me a new set of challenges and the opportunity to compete against so many talented players from throughout New England but most especially against Worcester based players from my collegiate, prep and high school career.

I continue to this day to be thankful in representing Don Coyle’s House of Champions team coached by the irrepressible Charlie Hall…an enthusiastic and knowledgeable promoter of the game in this great city.”
